Why ‘Free’ Mutual Fund Advice Online Isn’t Always Personalised to Your Goals

Free mutual fund advice online is usually general. It does not know your goals, your income, your family, or how much risk you can handle. A tip that works for one person can hurt another. Before you act, check who is advising you, whether they are registered, and whether they asked about your goals.

Key Facts

  • As per AMFI (the mutual fund industry body), Direct and Regular Plans of one scheme hold the same portfolio. Only the expense ratio (the yearly fund cost) and the NAV (the price of one unit) differ.
  • SEBI (the market regulator) registers investment advisers to give personalised investment advice for a fee.
  • As per SEBI’s FAQ, a mutual fund distributor can give only basic advice about the schemes they distribute.
  • In 2024, SEBI barred its regulated entities from linking with unregistered people who give advice or claim returns.

You search online for a good SIP. Within seconds, you find ten videos, five apps, and many reels. All of them are free. Many sound very sure. But none of them has met you. They do not know your child’s school plan, your home loan EMI, or your retirement age. So their advice fits a crowd, not you. This post explains what free advice misses, who can advise you in India, and how to check before you invest.

What Does ‘Free’ Online Advice Miss About You?

Free advice is built for a large audience. It cannot ask you questions. So it skips the facts that matter most. Here is what it usually misses:

  • Your goal and its date. A goal 3 years away needs a different plan from a goal 20 years away.
  • Your income and monthly savings. A plan must fit what you can really invest.
  • Your loans and current investments. A home loan EMI changes how much you can put aside.
  • Your risk comfort. A fund that falls sharply may scare one family and not another.
  • Your tax position. The same sale can leave two investors with different tax bills.

Take a fund whose price swings a lot. It may suit a goal 15 years away. But it may be risky for a goal only 3 years away. A ranking list cannot tell you this.

Many free posts also show past returns. Past returns do not predict your result. Your own return depends on when you start, how long you stay, and what you pay.

What Does a Goal-Based Plan Look Like in Numbers?

Example: ₹30 Lakh for College in 12 Years

Say a parent wants ₹30 lakh for a child’s college in 12 years. A reel says, “Start a ₹5,000 SIP.” A SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) means you invest a fixed amount every month.

Let us test that tip. Assume a steady 12% yearly return and monthly investing. Then ₹5,000 a month grows to about ₹15.4 lakh in 12 years. That is only half the goal.

To reach ₹30 lakh at 12%, the parent needs about ₹9,700 a month. At 10%, the need rises to about ₹11,100 a month.

These figures are for illustration only. Returns are not guaranteed. The point is simple. A tip without your goal can fall far short.

Who Is Allowed to Advise You in India?

SEBI registers investment advisers (RIAs) under the SEBI (Investment Advisers) Regulations, 2013. An RIA gives personalised investment advice and charges a fee.

A mutual fund distributor (MFD) sells mutual fund schemes. The fund house pays the distributor a commission. SEBI lets an MFD give only basic advice about the schemes they distribute. This is called incidental advice.

Many online voices are neither of these. In 2024, SEBI barred its regulated entities from linking with unregistered people who give advice or claim returns. SEBI still allows pure investor education. So education is fine. Specific buy calls and return claims are not.

Regular Plan or Direct Plan: What Should You Know?

Both plans belong to the same scheme. As per AMFI, they hold the same portfolio and use the same fund manager.

A Direct Plan has no distributor. So its expense ratio is lower, and its NAV is higher. A Regular Plan goes through a distributor. The distributor earns commission from the fund house.

AMFI notes that the NAV gap tends to be small. But the gap keeps compounding over the years.

We deal in Regular Plans, so we earn commission on them. If you enjoy research and can track funds alone, a Direct Plan may suit you. If you want help with goals, reviews, and paperwork, a distributor may help. Both are valid choices. Choose with open eyes.

How Can You Check Online Advice Before You Act?

Use these five checks. They take less than ten minutes.

  1. Find out who is speaking. Search the name on the official SEBI website. For a distributor, check the ARN on the AMFI website.
  2. See if they ask about your goal first. A good plan starts with your goal, not a fund name.
  3. Watch for return promises. No one can guarantee returns. Treat such claims as a warning.
  4. Ask how they earn. Commission, fee, or ad income all shape advice. An honest person tells you.
  5. Check if the advice is written for you. If the same words work for every viewer, it is general advice.

No tip online can replace a talk about your own goals. Start with your goal, your date, and your monthly savings. Then pick the person and the plan that fit them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is free mutual fund advice online safe to follow?

Free advice can teach you the basics, and that is useful. But it is general. It does not know your goal, income, loans, or risk comfort. Treat it as education, not as a plan. Before you invest, check who gave it, ask how they earn, and match the idea to your own goal.

Who can give personalised mutual fund advice in India?

SEBI-registered investment advisers (RIAs) can give personalised investment advice for a fee. Mutual fund distributors can give only basic advice about the schemes they distribute. This is called incidental advice. Always ask which role the person holds, and check their registration before you act.

What is the difference between a Direct Plan and a Regular Plan?

Both plans hold the same portfolio and have the same fund manager. A Direct Plan has no distributor, so its expense ratio is lower and its NAV is higher. A Regular Plan goes through a distributor, who earns commission from the expense ratio. AMFI says the NAV gap tends to be small.

Can social media finfluencers give mutual fund advice?

Giving investment advice generally needs SEBI registration. In 2024, SEBI also barred its regulated entities from linking with unregistered people who give advice or claim returns. SEBI allows pure investor education. So watch for specific buy calls or return claims from unregistered accounts. These are warning signs.

How do I know if online advice suits my goal?

Ask three questions. Does it name your goal and date? Does it use your monthly savings? Does it match the risk you can accept? If the answer is no, the advice is general. A good plan starts with your goal, not with a fund name.

Do I need to pay for good mutual fund guidance?

Not always. A Direct Plan investor pays no commission but does the research alone. A Regular Plan investor gets help from a distributor, whose commission sits inside the expense ratio. A fee-only RIA charges a fee instead. Pick the model you understand, and ask how your helper earns.
