Short answer: Deepfake investment scams use AI-made videos, voices, and photos of real experts to sell fake stock tips. The video looks real, but the expert never said it. Protect yourself. Check the adviser’s SEBI registration, never pay through chat links, and report fraud on 1930 within hours.
Key Facts
- India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal logged 22,68,346 cyber fraud incidents in 2024, with reported losses of ₹22,845.73 crore (Ministry of Home Affairs, December 2025). These figures cover all cyber fraud, not only deepfakes.
- In April 2026, BSE warned investors about the fourth fake deepfake video of its CEO in four months.
- As of March 2026, SEBI had reported over 1.3 lakh pieces of misleading investment content to platforms. It also had 66 fake trading apps taken down.
- SEBI-registered investment advisers carry registration numbers that start with INA. You can check any adviser on sebi.gov.in.
- The cyber fraud helpline is 1930. The reporting portal is cybercrime.gov.in.
You open Instagram. A famous market expert looks at the camera. He says, “Join my free group. I will share the next big stock.” You believe him. After all, you can see his face and hear his voice.
But the video is fake. An AI tool copied his face and voice. Scammers now use this trick to steal savings from honest families. This guide explains how it works. It also shows how to check who is real before you invest a single rupee.
What is a deepfake investment scam?
A deepfake is a video, voice, or photo made by artificial intelligence (AI). It copies a real person’s face and voice. In an investment scam, the fake person gives stock tips or promotes a scheme. The real person never said any of it.
Scammers pick faces you trust. These include stock exchange heads, well-known market experts, and business leaders. They post the video as an ad on social media. Or they forward it in WhatsApp groups.
This is not just a theory. In April 2026, BSE warned about a fake video of its CEO giving stock tips. It was the fourth such video in four months. BSE said the video was fabricated. It also said that neither its CEO nor any official gives investment advice or runs messaging groups.
How do these scams work, step by step?
- The bait. A fake video ad shows a trusted expert promising high profits.
- The group. The link takes you to a WhatsApp or Telegram group. Many “members” post profit screenshots. Many of them are fake accounts.
- The app. You must install a trading app or join a website. It looks professional. But it is not registered.
- The small win. You invest a little. The app shows big profits. Sometimes you can even withdraw a small amount.
- The big push. You are urged to invest much more. Then withdrawals stop. You are asked to pay “tax” or “fees” first.
- The exit. The group closes. The app disappears. Your money is gone.
SEBI is fighting back. The regulator reported over 1.3 lakh pieces of misleading investment content to platforms for removal. It also had 66 fake trading apps taken down. But new ones keep appearing. So your own habits are your best defence.
Real adviser or deepfake scam: how can you tell?
| Check | Genuine adviser | Deepfake scam |
|---|---|---|
| Registration | Shares a registration number you can check online | Shows no number, or a fake one |
| Returns | Explains the risk. Never promises a profit | Promises fixed or “guaranteed” profit |
| Contact | Has an official website, office address, and email | Reaches you only on WhatsApp or Telegram |
| Payment | Takes fees into a named business account and gives a receipt | Asks for money in a personal account or an unknown UPI ID |
| Pace | Gives you time to think | Says “Only 10 seats left. Invest today.” |
| Video source | Appears on the expert’s official channels | Appears only as an ad or a forwarded clip |

Why can “30% a month” never be true?
Here is a common scam promise. “Invest ₹50,000. Earn 30% every month.” It sounds small. But profit adds on profit every month. After 12 months, ₹50,000 would grow to about ₹11.6 lakh.
Now compare this with a long-term SIP. A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) means you invest a fixed amount every month. Say you invest ₹5,000 a month for 10 years. Assume a 10% yearly return. You would have about ₹10.2 lakh. You would have put in ₹6 lakh yourself.
That 10% is only an assumption. Real returns can be lower or higher. They are never guaranteed. But look at the gap. The scam promises more in 12 months than a patient plan gives in 10 years. That gap is the warning sign.
What are the red flags of a fake investment video?
- Guaranteed profit. No genuine investment can promise this.
- A famous face in a private group. Real officials do not run stock-tip groups.
- Pressure to act today. Fraud depends on speed. Real advice can wait.
- A personal bank account or UPI ID. Genuine firms collect money through verified business accounts.
- An unknown app link. Genuine apps come from the official app store, not from a chat.
- Odd video details. Watch for strange lip movement, a flat voice, or blurry edges near the face. But a good fake may show none of these.
- “Pay tax to withdraw.” This is a second scam on top of the first.
How do I verify an adviser, an app, or a payment account?
Check the adviser
Visit sebi.gov.in. Open the list of registered intermediaries. Choose “Investment Adviser” and search by name or number. Investment advisers carry numbers that start with INA. Research analysts carry numbers that start with INH.
Each role has its own registration. Investment advisers and research analysts register with SEBI. Mutual fund distributors register with AMFI and receive an ARN. Ask for the right number, then check it.
Check the app
In March 2026, SEBI began a verified badge on the Google Play Store. It first covered over 600 stockbroker apps. The badge says “First verify. Then invest.” Look for it before you install a trading app.
Check the payment account
Since October 2025, SEBI-registered brokers and mutual funds use UPI IDs that end in @valid. You can verify a UPI ID or bank account on the SEBI Check portal or the Saarthi app. Do this before you send any money.
Check the video
Pause before you act. Search for the same video on the expert’s official channel. If you cannot find it there, treat it as fake. Do not trust your eyes alone.
What should I do if I have already paid?
Act within hours. Early reporting gives banks a better chance to freeze the money. The Ministry of Home Affairs says its reporting system has saved over ₹7,130 crore. That covers more than 23 lakh complaints since 2021.
- Call 1930, the cyber fraud helpline.
- File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
- Tell your bank at once.
- Save screenshots, chats, and transaction IDs.
- Do not pay any “release fee” or “tax.”
Please verify this information from the latest official source, as helpline and portal details can change.
Frequently asked questions
What is a deepfake investment scam?
A deepfake investment scam uses AI-made videos, voices, or photos of real experts to promote fake stock tips or schemes. The expert never said those words. Scammers use the trusted face to pull you into a WhatsApp group or a fake trading app. Then they take your money and disappear.
How can I spot a deepfake video of a financial expert?
Look for odd lip movement, a flat or robotic voice, and blurry edges around the face. But good fakes may show none of these. So check the source instead. Search for the video on the expert’s official channel. If it appears only as an ad or a forwarded clip, do not trust it.
How do I check if an investment adviser is genuine in India?
Go to sebi.gov.in and open the list of registered intermediaries. Choose Investment Adviser and search by name or registration number. Investment advisers carry numbers starting with INA. For mutual fund distributors, check the ARN on the AMFI website. Always ask for the registration number first.
Can a stock exchange head or a celebrity really give me stock tips on WhatsApp?
No. In April 2026, BSE said its CEO does not give investment advice or run messaging groups. It called the viral video a deepfake. Treat any famous person offering stock tips in a private group as fake. Real officials and experts do not collect money through personal chats.
What should I do if I lost money to a fake investment group?
Act fast. Call the cyber fraud helpline 1930 and file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. Tell your bank at once. Keep screenshots, chats, and transaction IDs. Do not pay any more money, even if the group asks for tax or fees to release your funds. That is a second scam.
Is it safe to pay to a UPI ID that a trading group gives me?
No. Do not pay to any personal UPI ID or account shared in a chat. Since October 2025, SEBI-registered brokers and mutual funds use UPI IDs ending in @valid. You can check a UPI ID or bank account on the SEBI Check portal or the Saarthi app before you pay.
