๐Ÿ’ก How SIP Compounding Works

๐Ÿ“…

Step 1 โ€” Invest Monthly

Every month, a fixed amount is auto-debited and invested in your chosen mutual fund. So there is no need to time the market.

๐Ÿ“ˆ

Step 2 โ€” Units Accumulate

So your money buys more units when markets fall (rupee cost averaging) and fewer when markets rise โ€” smoothing out volatility.

๐Ÿš€

Step 3 โ€” Compounding Grows Wealth

So returns on your returns create exponential growth. The longer you stay invested, the more compounding works in your favour.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

How does a SIP calculator work?

A SIP calculator uses the compound interest formula to compute how a fixed monthly investment grows over time. So it factors in your monthly SIP amount, investment duration in years, and expected annual return rate to calculate the total invested amount, estimated returns, and final corpus value.

What is the AMFI standard SIP illustration rate?

AMFI (Association of Mutual Funds in India) commonly uses illustration rates of 8%, 10%, and 12% per annum for SIP projections. So these are for illustration purposes only and do not guarantee actual returns. Equity mutual fund returns vary based on market conditions and fund performance.

What is a good SIP amount to start with?

There is no universal answer, it depends on your income, goals and existing commitments. So a common guideline is to start with an amount you are comfortable investing consistently, and increase it over time as your income grows, using a Step-Up SIP if helpful.

What is the minimum SIP amount in India?

Most mutual funds in India allow SIPs starting from โ‚น500 per month. Also, some fund houses offer SIPs from as low as โ‚น100 per month. There is no upper limit on the SIP amount you can invest.

Is SIP better than a lump sum investment?

SIP offers the advantage of rupee cost averaging, buying more units when markets fall and fewer when markets rise, which reduces the impact of market volatility. However, a lump sum can work better when markets are at a low point. For most retail investors, SIP is recommended since it builds discipline and removes the need to time the market.

Can I stop or pause my SIP anytime?

Yes, SIPs in mutual funds are generally flexible and can be paused, stopped or modified, subject to the terms of the specific scheme and the platform you invest through.

What is a Step-Up SIP and how does this calculator show it?

A Step-Up SIP increases your monthly investment by a fixed percentage every year, so it grows in line with your income. Turn on "Step-Up SIP" above and set your annual increase โ€” the calculator then shows your year-by-year rising SIP amount and the extra corpus it builds compared to a flat SIP.

Can I invest SIP for fewer years than my full goal duration?

Yes. Turn on "Limit SIP to Fewer Years" above and set how many years you actually want to contribute โ€” for example, 5 years of SIP with your money then staying invested and compounding for a further 10 years, without any new contributions. This calculator shows exactly what that builds up to.
